Grade Requirements

Richmont requires a cumulative 3.0 GPA for all courses appearing on the transcript for graduation. Please note that the University does not round up grade point averages.

Transferred courses accepted by the University appear on the transcript with the original course title. Credit hours are recorded based on either the transferring institution or Richmont, whichever is less. A grade of P (Pass) is assigned to these courses, but no grade points are applied to the cumulative GPA.

General Academic Standing and Dismissal for Schools of Counseling and Ministry:

  • A maximum of two C grades (C+, C, or C-) may be applied toward meeting course requirements.

  • A student who earns a third C grade may repeat that course one time for credit.

  • A student who earns a fourth C grade is subject to academic dismissal.

  • Any student who receives a grade of F is subject to dismissal from the University.

  • A student whose term GPA falls below 3.0 in any semester will receive a letter of academic warning from the Records Office and be placed on SAP warning.

  • A student who receives a term GPA of less than 3.0 in two consecutive semesters will be subject to dismissal.

  • Conditionally admitted students are subject to academic dismissal if their term GPA falls below 3.0 within the first eight hours of traditionally letter-graded coursework.

School of Counseling Additional Requirements

Students enrolled in the School of Counseling must earn a minimum grade of B- in the following prerequisite courses before continuing into the clinical sequence:

  • CED5062: Introduction to Graduate Writing (if required)

  • CED6113: Helping Relationships

  • CED6123: Ethical, Legal and Professional Standards in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

  • CED6143: Psychopathology: Diagnosis and Treatment of Mental Disorders

  • CED6913: Applied Practicum and Treatment Planning Lab in Counseling

Doctor of Ministry (DMin) Additional Requirements

The Doctor of Ministry program maintains high academic standards for post-graduate study and adheres to stricter grading requirements. Grades of B- (2.7) and higher are considered fully passing for all DMin coursework.

A student may apply a maximum of one course with a grade in the C range (C+, C, or C-) toward their degree requirements, provided their cumulative GPA remains at or above 3.0.

If a student earns a second grade in the C range or lower at any point in the program, that course and any subsequent lower grades will not count toward degree requirements. In this event, the student will be placed on Academic Probation and must retake the course (if required) or take an equivalent elective.

Regardless of individual course grades, all doctoral students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to graduate. Because a C grade mathematically lowers the GPA below the required threshold, a student utilizing their one C allowance must earn grades of B or higher in subsequent courses to recover their standing.
